Weekend Features Fall Games for Special Athletes

RALEIGH — With all entrants going home with a medalfor their performances, the 1997 North Carolina Special Olympics FallGames have come to a happy close.

More than 600 athletes participated in the games, which included soccer,roller skating and cycling among the events.

At Lions Park the athletes competed in bocce and tennis Saturday. Thegames are veryrewarding for the players, coaches and everyone involved.

"It's a lot of fun to see them out there hustling, trying theirbest, working so hard to make everybody happy including themselves," saysCoach Alan Harris. "It's a lot of fun to see them smile and get upset andat the same time they get excited about playing."

The finals and awards ceremony were staged Sunday at the various locationswhere the games were played.
