Awareness the Goal of Stop the Violence Week

The YWCA and Interact are using disturbing facts like that to highlightthe importance of Stop the Violence week.

Women in the Triangle joined together Wednesday to speak out against domestic violence. A musical group made up of survivors of domestic violence said it hopes to reach out and empower other victims.

Participants blew whistles to signify that a woman is abused every nineseconds in the United States. Rev. Janet Watrous said more women than notknow someone who is a victim of violence.

Victims painted and shirts to express the pain of abuse and displayed themat Harris Teeter. At Interact, life-sized figures of women who have beenkilled by abusers in North Carolina were on display. They were called thesilent witnesses.

Amy Holloway, Interact director, said sometimes it takes a murder to makepeople aware of problems.

Participants held a candlelight vigil Wednesday night at INTERACT toremember these victims.
