GARNER, N.C. — A man wanted in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in Garner last weekend was arrested Thursday at a Dunn hotel, police said.

Richard Anderson Smart Jr., 44, of Raleigh, is charged with second-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, habitual drunken driving, felony speeding to elude arrest, misdemeanor hit-and run and driving with a revoked license.

Smart was arrested at a Holiday Inn Express in Dunn by members of the U.S. Marshal's Service Violent Fugitive Task Force and Garner police officers.

A driver fled a DWI checkpoint at Legend Road and U.S. Highway 401 early Sunday morning and led authorities on a chase on U.S. Highway 70. The car was going at about 100 mph when it hit a moped, authorities said.

Christopher Gonzalez-Guittierez, 25, of Raleigh, was killed, and Jesus Gonzales Orozoco, 25, was critically injured. Orozoco was in the intensive care unit at WakeMed Thursday.

The car struck another vehicle while trying to exit onto Vandora Springs Road, and the driver fled on foot after the car went down an embankment.

Smart has been convicted twice previously for driving drunk and had his license revoked in June, authorities said.
