UNC Panel to Discuss Sexual Harassment Complaints Against Professor

CHAPEL HILL — A UNC-Chapel Hill drama professor's job may be on the line.A university panel is scheduled to meet and discuss complaintsagainst a professor accused of sexual harassment.

The complaints are filed against Professor David Hammond, a professor ofdrama at the Graham Memorial building at UNC.

Six students say he talked explicitly about sex, participated in classroomskits where kissing and touching were involved, and spoke roughly tothem.

Anonymous complaints first surfaced in September of 1996.But, before the professor can receive punishment, the students must go onrecord with their names.They've done that, and now the university is relooking at the case.

David Hammond is currently on leave from the university. University officials are expected to comment later today.
