Murdered Trooper's Rank Reinstated; FBI Joins Investigation

RALEIGH — Police investigating the murders of two fellowofficers are getting help. FBI Director Louis Freeh has offered anyassistance investigators need in gathering evidence in the murders oftrooper Ed Lowry and deputy David Hathcock.

They were gunned down last week during a traffic stop in CumberlandCounty. South Carolina brothers Tilmon and Kevin Golphin are charged withthe murder. Investigators are in Virginia and South Carolina to interviewmotorists who may have seen the shootings.

A week after his murder, Trooper Lowry has been reinstated to hisformer rank. The State Personnel Commission decided last month to reversethe demotion of Trooper Ed Lowry.

The order had not been filed before Lowry was killed.

Lowry had been demoted from sergeant to senior trooper after a 1995incident in which he shot at a car he suspected was carrying drugs.
