Elderly Woman's Body Found in Wake County

Isabel Scarborough was found dead in her eastern Wake County home.
ZEBULON — An elderly Wake County woman with a reputationfor helping strangers may be may be the victim of her own kindness.Her body was found Tuesday inside her home near East Wake High School.

It's a house with a kicked-in back door -- a house with clear signsthat the woman struggled for her life.

Now the hunt is on to find out who killed Isabelle Scarboro. Familymembers and friends called her Belle. In large numbers, they remainedgathered around the woman's house late into the evening Tuesday. They saidScarboro was a well-loved woman who lived an exemplary life.

The Wake County Sheriff's Department is looking for clues as to theidentity of the killer. Sheriff John Baker says Scarboro apparentlydied from a severe trauma during what was probably a robbery.

Scarboro's niece, Betty Jones-Core, said the elderly woman was alittle afraid of living alone.

Family and friends say they suspect students from nearby East Wake HighSchool. Neighbors Gretta Jenkins and Pete Jeffries both say there hasbeen a great deal of trouble with some students in the neighborhood.

Deputies are looking into the possibility of student involvement. Infact, they discovered Scarboro's body after a student found herdriver's license in the school parking lot and turned it in to schoolauthorities. It was the license that led school security to Scarboro'shouse. When they arrived, they found the back door open and her bodyinside.

Some Eastern Wake students told WRAL-TV5'sKelly Wrightthat students liked tohang out in old barns on Scarboro's property after school.
