Big Travel Weekend Under Way

North Carolina State Troopers will be positioned every 10 miles along major highways over the holiday weekend.
RALEIGH — Highways and byways across the state arealready beginning to get crowded. The approaching Labor Day weekend is oneof the busiest travel holidays and, if you're headed out, prepare forsome delays.

If you are hitting the road.. expect lots of company. More than 30million Americans are driving somewhere over Labor Day weekend.Be safe and don't speed. The North Carolina Highway Patrol says dozens ofextra troopers will watch over the highways across the state.

Morning traffic was heavier than usual, and troopers say things willpick up steadily throughout the day.

Chances are, if you do travel, you will see a lot of troopers stoppingpeople for speeding and to check for other violations. The North CarolinaHighway Patrol is putting troopers out every 10 miles along traditionallybusy stretches of highway. Sgt. Mike Mills says traffic was moving wellFriday morning and that, if everyone is alert and cautious, it cancontinue that way.

Anyone planning on traveling the state's major highways will be closelywatched. Officials in Virgina, South Carolina and Georgia say they havesimilar plans for placing troopers out on the roads.
