<b>ASHEVILLE</b> — Motorists may be able to take Interstate 40straight across the Tennessee state line by Labor Day.

That's the latest goal for workers trying to clear unstable rockand dirt from the rock slide area in the mountains. But no matter thedeadline, Department of Transportation officials say they will open theroad only when it's safe.

The road has been closed since July first.
