<b>DURHAM</b> — A man whose body was stretched across railroadtracks near Pettigrew and Grant Streets in Durham was killed Saturdaynight when a train could not stop in time.

Police said Winfield Mason, 36, of Lyons Street, died instantly whenAmtrak's Piedmont passenger train hit him about 8:40. The train was on itsway from Durham to Cary.

Several of Mason's friends said he had been drinking heavily during theday.

Mason's body was taken to the state medical examiner's office in ChapelHill for autopsy.
