Neuse Receives Another Million Gallon Sewage Spill

GARNER — Over 1 million gallons of untreated sewage hasentered a tributary of the Neuse River. The mess began spilling out of abroken pipe at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. It is the second major spill tohead toward the Neuse in recent weeks.

The North Carolina Division of Water Quality has sent crews and heavyequipment out to try to stop the flow and clean up what has alreadyspilled. Officials say they believe the leak began Monday night or earlyTuesday.

On the scene at 5 p.m. were six trucks, from which gravel was beingunloaded in attempt to stop the flow of sewage from the 16-inch pipe.

The spill occurred in Garner, about a half-mile from Lake Benson.
