Hathaway's Family Thanks Everyone for Support

SHARPSBURG — The family of the slain Sharpsburg policechief gathered Wednesday to publicly thank friends, family, co-workersand strangers for their prayers and outpourings of sympathy.

Chief Wayne Hathaway was shot and killed last week while responding toa domestic disturbance call. Wednesday, his family spoke about thetragedy for the first time.

The Wilson County family says they wouldn't have made it this farwithout the kindness of friends and strangers. Faye Beddingfield isHathaway's sister. She said they wanted to thank the entire state.

The police chief's son, Shawn Hathaway (seated in red shirt in familypicture above left), said his father will be greatlymissed and was greatly admired.

The family expressed special gratitude to those in Wilson, Edgecombeand Nash counties. Sharpsburg is situated near the borders of all threecounties.

The four remaining members of the Sharpsburg police force went back towork Tuesday. There's no word yet on when a new chief will be named. Thatdecision will be made by the town council and town manager.

Memorial funds have been set up in boththe names of Chief Wayne Hathaway and the second victim in the shootingGloria Nicholson.
