Mays Charged with Murdering Raleigh Police...

RALEIGH — As the family, friends and colleagues ofslain Raleigh police officer Paul A. Hale prepared for and attended hisfuneral, the man suspected in Hale's death and that of another manwas charged in the slaying. Kawame Lloyd Mays, 19, was formallyarrested Sunday on two counts of first-degree murder, accused of killingHale and Michael J. Walker, a 33-year-old North Raleigh man.

Mays has been in custody since Friday but had been in a local hospitalwhere he was treated for a shoulder wound sustained in a shootout withpolice. He appeared in a Wake County court Monday afternoon. His nextappearance is set for Monday August 4.

Hale was shot in the head with a 9 mm handgun in front of Ligon MiddleSchool Friday afternoon. He and his partner had been among officerslooking for Mays, who was wanted in the shooting death of Walker. Theearlier murder occurred on Quarry Street early Friday. Walker was also shot in the head.

Hale is survived by his wife and two young daughters. The funeral isscheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Raphael's Catholic church inNorth Raleigh.

Hale was a Raleigh police officer for seven years, and was promoted to detective just four days before his death.

Mays' hometown is unknown. Warrants exist for him in Albany, New York.He is charged with stealing his mother's car in New York. He gave her homeas Queens, New York, and also St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

Mays is being held without bond in Raleigh's Central Prison. Usually,suspects are kept in the city jail while they await trial or until theycan post bond. Wake County District Attorney Colon Willoughby has notannounced if he will seek the death penalty.Two funds have been set up in the wake of Hale's death.
