Accused Molester Led "Normal Life"

RALEIGH — Those who knew of him say the husband andfather seemed to lead a normal life, but Tuesday, he was arrested for taking indecentliberties with a minornear a North Raleigh swimming pool.

Parents in the Greystone subdivision say the are relieved that thesuspect has been taken into custody. Police were able to arrest35-year-old Guy Mashburn, at least in part, because of a flyer showing acomposite of thesuspect. Several people recognized the man in the drawing and calledpolice.

Mashburn was taken into custody late Tuesday afternoon. Police say helured a 7-year-old girl into a gazebo near the pool and molested her last Friday. Mashburn is charged with first-degree sexual offense, kidnapping,and taking indecent liberties with a minor.

Even though he's under arrest, parents in the Greystone neighborhoodsay they're not taking any chances with their children. Parents Kay andJerry Letterman say things are different in their house and in theneighborhood.

The Lettermans live about a block from the pool. For years, they say,their sons have walked or ridden their bicycles to the pool. According toKay Letterman, they won't be doing that in the future.

Raleigh Police Sgt. Charles Bryant says even thought Mashburn has noprior record as a sex offender, it's possible he could be involved inother cases.

Mashburn is a Raleigh resident. He is married and has a 2-year-oldchild.
