African-American Groups Say They Want a Voice in N.C.

RALEIGH — Members of the North Carolina NAACP along withmembers of the Legislative Black Caucus say their voices are not beingheard and they want to see that rectified. They say you'll be seeing andhearing a lot more from them from now on.

A large delegation from each group packed a conference room at theGeneral Assembly Wednesday to say they are being shut out of the decisionmaking process on welfare reform, historically black colleges, and thestate's budget.

Some say it's government leadership's fault they are being left out.Rep. Mickey Michaud (D-Durham) said he thinks officials are insensitive.

NAACP President Skip Alston said the groups plan to have highervisibility.

The group went on to the legislature to lobby and voice opinions. Somegovernment leaders said they think some of theopinions expressed Wednesday morning were a little off base.
