State Experiences Rapid Rise in Rabies

RALEIGH — Rabies has reached the epidemic stage inNorth Carolina and experts to not expect it to go away any time soon.

The number of reported rabies incidents has risen by more than 400cases so far this year, and state health officials expect to see around1,500 total for 1997.

That's 150 times more cases than just six years ago when only tencases were reported.

The state veterinarian says three separate outbreaks fromTennessee, Florida and Pennsylvania have converged on North Carolina.
