Six Fires Burn Overnight in Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL — An overnight rash of fires hasinvestigators working overtime in Orange County. Six fires broke outovernight, three in Carrboro and three in Chapel Hill. All the firesoccurred within a one mile area and all broke out between 12:30 and 4:30a.m. Tuesday.

In the worst of the six fires, flames broke out near thepool at Village West Condos on Cain Ridge Trail just after 4 a.m. Crewsevacuated the apartments after a nearby storage building caught fire.

Investigators don't know what caused the fires or how much damage wasdone, but several of them started in trash dumpsters.

Barb McCullan lives near the Village West fire site. She says she nowhas quite a bit of clean up to do because of smoke damage.

Firefighters will not say if they think the six fires are related toeach other or two a similar rash of fires between March and October, 1996.Police have been called in to help with the investigation into the causesof the fires.
