Fire Destroys Chicken Plant Building

SILER CITY — A Chatham County poultry plant will reopenits doors Monday morning, although a weekend fire gutted a storagebuilding. causing thousands of dollars in damage.

No one was injured.

Firefighters worked for hours to control hot spots at the GoldenPoultry on Chatham Avenue. Supplies stored in the building were damaged,but the blaze did not affect the main plant. Golden Chicken employsabout 650 people.

Sunday's hot temperatures added to firefighters' burdens, and eachcould work only about 15 minutes before needing a break. Approximately 75people were involved in fighting the fire.

The fire's origins have not been determined.
