Cavin, Former Durham Mayor, Dies

DURHAM — After a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease,former Durham Mayor Wade L. Cavin died Sunday at a local nursing home. Hewas 82.

Cavin served as mayor from 1975-79. He had been a councilmember since 1969.

As founder of a profitable office supply business, Cavin was abenefactor of the University of North Carolina. He had arrived at theuniversity during the depression from his Troutman home with $1.05 in hispocket.

Always grateful for the difference the university played in hislife, Cavin included Carolina in his will and created an insurance policythat benefits the university.

Cavin is survived by a son, Winston. Another son, Wade L. Cavin Jr.,died in a car accident in 1964 at the age of 19. Cavin's wife Jean diedin 1989.

Funeral services have been tentatively set for 3 p.m. Wednesday at St.Paul's Lutheran Church in Durham. Visitation will be from 7 - 9 p.m. atHall-Wynne Funeral Home at 1113 W. Main St.
