Woman Holds Police at Bay for 4 Hours in North Raleigh

RALEIGH — Raleigh police were called to the StoneyHollow townhouse complex early Tuesday afternoon. Police say a womanwalked out of her apartment at about 1 p.m. firing a handgun.

The woman, 41-year-old Denise Kerr, fired several shots, thenapparently returned to the apartment. Police believe she was firing atgrounds workers.

Benny Woodley of Cardinal Lawn service said some of the workers werecleaning up debris in an area near the woman's doorway when she came outyelling and shooting because of the noise their equipment was making.

Police sent a SWAT team to the complex thinking she was holdingone of the grounds workers hostage in the apartment, but it turned out shewas alone inside.

Neighbors say they don't recall an incident like this before, butpolice say the woman does have a history of mental problems.

She may be admitted to Dorothea Dix hospital where she has been apatient before.
