Property Tax Exemption Bill Could Help Farmers

RALEIGH — The North Carolina State Senate is scheduledto vote this week on a bill opponents claim will help a few at the expenseof the average tax payer.

The property tax exemption bill would particularly help farmers by exempting them from paying taxes on farm or forest land when they'reforced to sell the land for developement.

Instead, backtaxes would be paid by the government body or publicutility buying the land.

The House has already passed the bill.
