Durham Adds Radio Stations to Emergency Communications

DURHAM — There are two new radio stations on the air inDurham, but you probably won't listen to either one unless you're introuble. A solar powered, portable, A-M radio station is the newest partof Durham's Emergency Communications System.

The unit can be moved into a trouble spot on a moment's notice.Then Emergency leaders can immediately broadcast important informationon AM 900 and 910.

In neighborhoods if there was a tornado or localized flooding we couldset this up and have the folks know exactly who they need to call, whatnumbers they need to call and what they can do to get back on their feetand get their lives back together.

The emergency broadcast unit is already on the air. Durham City and Countysplit the $34,000 cost. It is the first unit of its kind operated by alocal government in North Carolina.
