D.A. Clears Officers in Shooting Death of Robbery Suspect

BYNUM — The Chatham County District Attorney has clearedpolice officers who fired at and killed a bank robbery suspect in March.The suspect and two women, one of whom drove the car, led police, deputiesand state troopers on a high-speed chase for 22 miles, from North Raleigh,onto the Interstate-440 Beltline, and onto U.S. 1 into Chatham County.

When the suspects' vehicle ran off the road, Robert Downey, Jr.appeared in the back seat and pointed a gun at police. A Raleigh policeofficer, a trooper and a Wake County deputy opened fire, hitting Downeyseven times.
