Widening Slated for U.S. 401 in Wake County

RALEIGH — Work will begin Monday to widen US 401 fromits interchange with US 1 to south of Fox Road. Numerous traffic shiftswill be needed to complete the project, and drivers are asked to be alert.

Eventually, the 1.4 mile strip will be widened to six lanes.

The first phase will involve the US 401 interchange to south of CalvaryDrive, during which Batts Road will be realigned with 401. Motorists andresidents will be advised of this closing in advance.

The second phase will involve widening US 401 to Fox Road. Theproject is expected to wind up in June, 1999.

All lanes will remain open on US 1 North and South from 6 a.m. to 7p.m. Monday - Friday. All lanes will remain open on US 401 from 6 a.m.to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday - Friday, and on holidays andholiday weekends. There will be some night work during the project.
