Safety Violations Found in Logging Truck

DURHAM — Investigators from the state Division of MotorVehicles are examining a logging truck that was involvedin a fatal wreck in Durham Saturday. Officials said they found severalsafetyviolations on the log truck during a preliminary examination. Two peoplein a car died when the fully-loaded truck rolled over it.

Police are still investigating to determine who was at fault.

Officials said the brakes on the truck's second axle were notfunctioning, and one of the hubs was cracked. Also, only two straps hadbeen used to secure the logs, instead of the required eight straps.

A man and a woman in the car died; the truck driver and a woman in her50s survived the crash.

No one witnessed theaccident, but Durham resident Robert Ayers said heheard the accident and ran to find the victims trapped inside their car.

N.C. State Troopers said the truck was heading north on Roxboro Road. Theysaid they thought the car was crossing the Snow Hill Road intersectionwhen the truck ran over it.
