The Graduated Licenses bill passed the North Carolina House today on afinal vote of 86 to 14. The bill now goes to the governor for hisapproval.
Under the bill, drivers under age 18 would have to pass through threelevels of training before earning full driving priviliges. Young driversfirst would be limited to driving under supervision and only until nine atnight. After one year, they could drive without supervision, but onlyuntil nine p.m. unless they are traveling to or from work. Finally, ateenager could drive unsupervised. A new driver between the ages of 16and 18 can drive now without anyrestrictions after passing a driver's education program.
Governor Hunt says that he will sign the bill into law. The law takeseffect December 1, 1997.
