Trouble Appears to be Brewing in Dunn Police Department

DUNN — In the last six months, four Dunn police officershave been fired and a fifth is under investigation. The town of 10,000 residents only has 30 officers at full staff.

In September, an officer was fired for using excessive force, inJanuary a 26-year veteran of the force was fired for altering anemployment application. A few days later, a lieutenant resigned amidallegations he gave alcohol to a minor. Now, a 17-year veteran is chargedwith police brutality.

Dunn Police Chief Kenny Sills says sometimes, this sort of trouble canstart from within the department.

Dunn resident Phyllis Massey says she thinks the town needs betterofficers.

Resident Anthony Johnson says he knows the stress of police work cantake its toll.

While the past six months have been difficult for the force, the nextsix months should reveal whether the problems can be addressed. Two of thefired officers are appealing their cases. The officer currently underinvestigation has been confined to administrative duties.
