CARY — Jurors heard final arguments Friday in thecase of a child who was seriously injured by suction from a swimming pooldrain. The jury will begin its deliberations Monday.

About 80 percent of Valerie Lakey's intestines were pulled out when shegot stuck on the open drain in a children's pool at a Cary swim club. Thechild was 5-years-old at the time.

Lakey's parents have filed suit against Sta-Rite Industries, theWisconsin company that manufacturers the drain covers, for nearly $40million. Attorneys for Sta-Rite maintain the company did no wrong and thatit was the pool staff's failure to properly close the drains that causedthe accident.
