Gun Safety Classes on Rise

RALEIGH — North Carolina's law allowing people tocarry concealed weapons took effect about a year ago. About 21,000 TarHeels have sought permits -- a lot fewer than expected.

But as the law goes into its second year, gun safety classes are seeinga jump in enrollment. At the Personal Defense and Handgun Safety Center,classes are already booked through March.

Kathy Jackson, a gun class participant, said she wanted to learn thelegal issues surrounding concealed weapons and personal safety as well.Then, she plans to carry a concealed weapon when driving in her car.

For people who are unfamiliar with guns, some shops offer beginnerclasses that start with the basics. In order to get a permit, you mustpass the required handgun course.
