"He sits in his cell and he stares," said Joe Cheshire, a prominentcriminal defense attorney hired by the family of Tim Hawks.
Hawks make his firstcourt appearance today in Wilson County. He is charged withkillinghis wife, Kelly Hawks, a local school teacher, two days before Christmas.
Relatives say Hawks was diagnosed several years ago with manicdepression and was taking medication.
Hawks, a fourth-grade teacher at New Hope Elementary,was shot twice Monday night at close range with a .22-caliber rifle in thecouple's Waverly Road home. Tim Hawks turned himself in to police hoursafterthe slaying.
Kelly Hawks, 35, was buried at 11 a.m. Friday in Henderson.
