Man Dies In Highway Chase

LOUISBURG — The Highway Patrol is investigating ahigh speed chase that occurred Friday night and led to the driver'sdeath. They said initial inspection indicates that the trooper, who wasnot injured, followed procedures.

At 10:43 Friday night, Trooper Wade Bulloch clocked a Ford Topaz doing103 miles an hour on Highway 96. Bulloch chased the car for 14.7 miles,which took approximately 12 minutes.

The chase ended at a bridge on NC 1720, when a man later identified asRandy Earl Hicks, 38, crashed into a bridge guard rail. Hicks, fromZebulon, went through the windshield. He died at the scene.

Bulloch's car ran off the right side of the road, and his patrol carskidded onto the bridge, but he was not hurt.

Toxicology tests will be performed to see if Hicks was driving underthe influence.
