Governor Addresses 'Fathers Against the Crackdown'

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Governor Jim Hunt decided to address theissue of fathers who are denied visitation with their children. A groupknown as Fathers Against the Crackdown said earlier this week that theywould refuse to pay their child support if their complaint was not takenseriously.

That action came on the heels of a crackdown in Orange County duringwhich so-called deadbeat parents were refused drivers licenses if theydidn't catch up on child support payments. The group said they needed thesame sort of legal recourse to obtain court-ordered visitation with theirchildren.

Governor Hunt said Thursday that he thought the request had merit andthat he would look into the matter. Friday, he officially acknowledged themen's concerns.

There is no word yet on when new legislation on visitation might beproposed.
