Bank Robber Eludes Cumberland County Authorities

HOPE MILLS — The First Citizens Bank on Main Streetin Hope Mills was held up at about 2 Friday afternoon, but no suspect hasyet been apprehended.

The man was alone when he committed the robbery, and fled on foot carrying a bank bag filled with money.

Witnesses reported seeing a man run from the bank toward a house abouta block away. Officers surrounded the house, called out to anyone whomight be inside.

Officers then forced their way into the house. They found no oneinside, but the Hope Mills police chief did bring aleather jacket out with them when their search was over.

While they were inside, the people who live in the house came home andwere frightened and surprised to see the house surrounded by armedpolice officers and FBI agents.

Resident Patricia Pearce said she didn't know what to think when shedrove up.

At 6 p.m., the suspect remained at-large. He was described as amale with a dark complexion, wearing a t-shirt and blue jeans, andpossibly wearing a jacket or cap. His height was estimated at about5-foot-10-inches and his weight at about 150 pounds.

Police think he may have escaped into a wooded area headed southwestout of Hope Mills.
