Fire Closes RDU International Airport

MORRISVILLE (STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS) — Fire broke outin a hangar Thursdayafternoon at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, burning two airplanesand closing the airport for about 30 minutes..

All available firefighting equipment was at the scene, which led to theclosing of the airport. Two people were treated for smoke inhalation. Thefire started when a single-engine aircraft caught fire inside a hangarowned by Raleigh Flying Service.

The burning hangar was situated close to the airport's control tower.The blaze, which started about 5:30 p.m., was brought under control by 6p.m.

``We had all of our fire units at the scene,'' said RDU spokesman RickMartinez. ``Ifsomething else happened, we couldn't haveresponded to it.''

Seven aircraft were in the hangar when the fire broke out, but one wasremoved from the building shortly afterthe fire started, Martinez said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
