Officials said Donald Williams of Atlanta was driving for ScaleasAirport Services of Follcroft, PA. About 6 a.m. Sunday, he was drivingnorth on I-85 when his rig clipped a guardrail, slid down an embankmentand came to rest in the water.
Rescuers said Williams was lucky to have survived, and that hisseatbelt undoubtedly contributed to his sole injury being a scratch on onearm.
The bridge, alas, suffered mightily. Officials put the damage ataround $100,000, which they say will be billed to the trucking firm forwhich he was driving.
The accident created an immense traffic jam. Nine hours after thecrash, traffic was still backed up 6 1/2 miles in both directions. Asdusk settled in, motorists were still dealing with a detour.
