Dwayne Crump, 32, died Sunday evening at Wake Medical Center. Hiswife, Angela, and their two children, Allison and Bryan, are in stablecondition. One of the children was thrown from the wan upon impact.
The crash occurred after 27-year-oldAnthony Johnson led law officerson a 3-county chase that at times reached speeds of 100 mph. Johnson diedshortly after the crash.
A third car hit by Johnson was driven by Ian Small. His airbaginflated, and he was not seriously injured.
Officers had tried to stop Johnson twice through use of "stop sticks,'which, when driven over, deflate a car's tires. He was speeding so fast,however, that he shot through the intersections just seconds before anadvance team of officers could toss the stop sticks onto the pavement.
Johnson had been convicted three years ago in Orange County ofmanslaughter, following another high-speed chase. At the time of hisdeath, he was wanted for violating probation.
Officers said the Camaro he was driving had been reported stolen inAugust from a Smithfield car dealership.
The chase began on Interstate 40 near Raleigh-Durham InternationalAirport about 8 p.m. Friday when Johnson was spotted driving inexcess of 100 mph.Officers followed him as he took NC 55 south, then N.C. 54, and wound uponU.S. 64. The multi-car accident occurred at the intersection of U.S. 64with Laura Duncan Road in Apex.
Highway Patrol troopers say they were backing off from the chase as itneared the heavily traveled intersection. A Highway Patrol spokesman saidthe pursuing troopers followed proper chase procedures.
Traffic was diverted from that section of U.S. 64 for several hoursafterthe crash.
