City of Medicine Tries to Conquer Image Problem

DURHAM — The City of Durham, struggling to overcomeperceptions as a crime-ridden city, has tied its own record for homicides.

The 35th homicide this year ties and all-time record for the City ofMedicine. The most recent killing occurred Sunday.

But residents and city officials say they are not about to stop withtheir campaign to improve Durham's image.

Chris Wood, a dentist who moved to Durham from Georgia, says he's notdiscouraged.

While the homicide rate hasn't given Durham's image any boost, theGreater Durham Chamber of Commerce isn't taking it lightly. The chamberhasn't skipped a beat in its promotion of Durham as a good place to visitand a great place to live, while television commercials tout the city'sfiner points.

Robert Booth, a chamber affiliate, says there's an appropriate responseto any stone hurled.

Booth and others believe that when more people learn about NCCU andDuke University, and realize that Research Triangle Park is mostly inDurham, a renewed spirit is sure to follow.
