All Those Trees ... Going to Waste

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Hurricane Fran's impact is easing, butthere are still hundreds of trees laying around. Many homeowners had highhopes that all that lumber would be well used, and maybe bring in somecash, but those hopes are being dashed.

On Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh, bob Bozart has a huge, 200-year-old oaktree smothering his front yard. The tree has sentimental value, he says, but he wishes it had monetary value as well.

A meeting of forestry officials determined that the average Fran victimwon't be able to reap a dime out of all that downed timber. Bob Slocum ofthe North Carolina Forestry Association says the scattered trees simplywon't prove profitable.

Officials also remind everyone that it is illegal to burn that timberwithin city limits. the Army Corps of Engineers has set up massiveburning sites outside city limits.
