Southpoint Mall A Magnet For Growth

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Durham's new super mall,

The Streets at Southpoint

, has become a magnet for growth.

Once plans were announced for the mall, other projects, including offices, apartments and gas stations, started popping up all around it.

Last month, the Durham city council paved the way for an autopark that will have up to seven car dealerships.Other projects include hotels and a conference center.

"The Village at the Parks at Southpoint and the car dealers are obviously trying to feed off good access to the interstate and activity at the mall," says Dick Hails, city-county planner.

All the development means more traffic. Road improvements are already in the works to make sure Interstate 40 and Fayetteville Road can handle the influx of cars.

Southpoint is set to open the first week in March.
