The North Carolina Turnpike Authority Board is calling the proposed road the Western Wake Parkway. It would be an extension of Interstate 540 past Highway 55. Right now, tax money is being used to build I-540 from I-40 to Highway 55. A toll road would extend that nearly 13 miles.
A consultant said a $2 toll for the Western Wake Parkway is the way to go. Drivers would pay the toll on the new I-540 and Durham Freeway extension in Research Triangle Park. Supporters said the toll is needed to pay for the new road's $300 million price tag.
Consultants said using tolls to finance construction could get the road built in five years.
The Turnpike Authority will ask for more studies before voting on the project.
