The Shearon Harris plant is one of five nuclear plants in the state. It met all federal safety standards last year, still, local watchdog groups have criticized the Progress Energy plant, calling it one of the nation's worst performers.
Critics say there have been three serious security failures since the 1990s and employees have not done enough to improve safety problems.
Shearon Harris leaders maintain security measures are some of the best in the nation with checkpoints and armed guards. Federal investigators with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission did look into 19 specific issues raised by the watchdog groups back in March. Seven issues were substantiated, but the NRC determined they were not major security problems.
Plant leaders are hoping to expanding the plant by adding new nuclear reactors to produce more energy. Local groups like NC Warn are working to get Progress Energy to consider other options.
