Police said Thursday that 48 percent of motor vehicle break-ins and 28 percent of vehicles stolen in Fayetteville this year were made possible because car doors were not locked. In some cases, owners left keys in the vehicle, as well as valuables such as wallets and laptop computers that were visible to police.
As a result of the number of preventable vehicle thefts and break-ins in the city, officers have placed posters in business windows that remind people to lock their doors and remove valuables.
Fayetteville residents may also register for the police department's Auto Theft Action Campaign, in which a special decal is placed on the vehicle that is registered and gives officers permission to stop that vehicle to verify ownership.
