Cumberland County Double Shooting Ruled Murder-Suicide

Posted Updated

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — Investigators are calling the shooting deaths of a young Cumberland County couple a murder-suicide.

According to authorities, Tommy Mauney, 30, and his girlfriend, Heather Hales, 30, were found shot to death at Mauney's home on

Slocomb Road

just outside Fayetteville.

A family member found the two dead late Friday afternoon.

As investigators tried to sort out the deaths, family and friends waited patiently for answers.

"Yeah, he's going to be missed by a lot of people," said Mauney's neighbor, Jerry Rogers, who worked with Mauney laying phone lines at Fort Bragg.

"Anything he did, he was good at," he said. "He was a young guy. He had everything going for him, everything."

Investigators aren't sure if the shootings happened Thursday night or Friday. A coworker told WRAL that a friend spoke with Mauney over the phone at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is waiting for autopsy results to release the circumstances of their deaths. The families of the victims declined to comment.
