Thursday's Storms Bring Strong Winds, Hail Across Area

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Severe weather began moving into the Triangle area early Thursday afternoon and continued through the early evening hours.

A cold front began dropping southeast into North Carolina Thursday afternoon and is expected to move toward the coast in the evening hours. The combination of an unstable air mass and increasing winds aloft ahead of the front is expected to lead to scattered thunderstorms.

Several areas across the Triangle have had reports of damaging winds and hail. Trees were reported down near Carthage in Lee County, and Lee, Johnston and Sampson counties also reported golf-ball-sized hail. Tornado warnings were briefly in effect in a few counties, but no reports of serious damage have been received.
