Empty Test Tube Leads To Evacuation Of RTP Building

DURHAM, N.C. — Authorities said a suspicious package was found inside a building in Research Triangle Park Friday morning, leading to the evacuation of more than 200 people.

The package was found at

1904 T.W. Alexander Drive

, which is the location of the offices for Laboratory Corp. of America Occupation Testing Services.

At around 10 a.m., an employee found a manila envelope with what appeared to be a pipe-like device inside, police said.

Authorities say a disgruntled Labcorp customer from the United Kingdom mailed a package to the building that was addressed to a nonexistent employee. The mail room supervisor called 911 and placed the package in the freezer.

When police arrived, they too felt the package was suspicious, partly due to its size and shape. An X-ray of the package revealed that it contained an empty test tube.

Tensions heightened just after noon, when a bomb-sniffing dog appeared to detect something suspicious in a taxi in the parking lot, which also turned out to be a false alarm.

Authorities allowed the workers to re-enter the building sometime after 1 p.m.
