Lack Of Funds Taking Toll On State's National Park Sites

GREENSBORO — North Carolina's nine national park sites are in need of repairs, but there is not enough money around to maintaina basic level of upkeep.

Paul Winegar of the National Park System's southeast regionaloffice in Atlanta says the lack of funds has led to a backlog thatwould cost at least $125 million to address.

The visitors center at the Wright Brothers Memorial at KittyHawk has been closed since November because of a leaky roof.Workers are expected to replace the roof soon.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has been closed for more than amonth after a chunk of an iron stairway support broke loose inJune. Park officials didn't know about the support because there isnot enough money to perform detailed inspections.

At the Guilford Courthouse, site of a pivotal Revolutionary Warbattle, downed trees present a fire risk and several buildings needrepair.
