Raleigh police were chasing a 2006 Kia Sorrento that had been reported stolen shortly before noon.
The victim, Althea Shaw-Williams, of Raleigh, told police that a man approached her while she was stopped at an intersection on Highwoods Boulevard. The man attempted to take the vehicle and forced her to remain in the car, police said.
Williams was able to escape on foot.
Authorities said that a short time later, police located the vehicle on Six Forks Road, but the man driving it refused to stop and attempted to elude officers.
The chase began at about noon and ended with a minor crash on South Blount Street.
The driver of the car, who has tentatively been identified as Farley Linford Bernard, 41, jumped out of the vehicle and ran, but was captured shortly thereafter, authorities said.
Bernard was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, attempted first-degree kidnapping, possession of stolen property, two fugitive warrants and numerous traffic charges.
