Authorities Investigate Fire That Broke Out While Family Slept

Posted Updated

WENDELL, N.C. — Wake County authorities are investigating a possible case of arson in Wendell in which a fire started while a family slept in their house.

The incident happened Wednesday morning while James Clegg, his wife and their baby slept in the house in Wendell, said Mary Ella Hutchinson, the owner of the house.

Another two children -- a daughter and teenaged son -- also live at the house. They had just left to go to school at time of the fire, Hutchinson said.

Wake County Sheriff's officials are not commenting on the case, but said that it is a "very sensitive" case.

Hutchinson said that the fire was set in a trash pile at the rear of the house at 7008 Corfu Place and that it's "obviously intentional by looking at where the fire was started."

Hutchinson said that she believed a Clegg family member was involved in setting the fire.

"From what we understand, it was a family situation," Hutchinson said.

The fire destroyed the house.

No one in the house was injured in the blaze, but a firefighter for the Wendell Fire Department was slightly hurt while fighting the fire.
