"They probably did it because it makes a nice noise when it's breaking out," said Habitat director John Sing.
Local volunteers have spent weeks hard at work with hammers and saws. Even a church group from Canada helped with framing and carpentry.
"After those kids invested their time and effort to travel down here and to do the work, it's just particularly heartbreaking," said David Haley with the United Methodist Church in Littleton.
Haley helped organize the trip for the Canadian students. The Habitat organization in Halifax and Northampton counties is a low budget operation.
"We usually build one or two houses a year, and we work until the money runs out," said Haley.
Sing said the Gaston project was nearly out of money, but could have been completed on time until the vandals struck. The damage will add about $2,000 thousand dollars to the construction costs.
"I don't know what else to say other than shame on the people who did it," said Sing.
The vandals haven't stopped work on the house. Volunteers are expected back on the job site Saturday. Gaston police continue their investigation of the vandalism.
