On Friday, the 911 call made by civics teacher Lisa Kukla was released, detailing the drama that had unfolded inside her classroom a short time earlier.
"He shot his gun twice," said Kukla during the call. "He had two guns, a knife... he had a whole backpack of stuff."
During the call, the dispatcher asked Kukla if she knew where Foster was. She said, "No, we told him to run out the door and begged him to leave us."
Shortly after the call, police surrounded the school. They say 17-year-old William Foster ran from the building after holding Kukla and student Chelsea Slegal hostage at gunpoint. Kukla is credited with defusing the situation and following crisis management procedures.
No one was hurt in the incident. Foster was taken to UNC Hospitals for observation. Charges against him are now pending.
