DUPLIN COUNTY — A trip to the beach ended in tragedy Sunday morning for a 14-year-old girl from Raleigh.
Hope Mooney was killed when the SUV she was riding in flipped over on east-bound I-40.
At about 9:50 a.m., the Toyota 4-Runner was eastbound on I-40, heading for the beach, when it ran off the road. The driver overcorrected, and the car then crossed the median and flipped over, landing in the west-bound lanes, according to the Highway Patrol.
Mooney's sister and another passenger were taken to Sampson General Hospital with injuries which were serious but not life-threatening.
